Covid-19 VACCINATION RATE wreaks havoc on STRAIGHT COMMUNITY

The COVID-19 pandemic ripped through an already shaken world.
With 1.1 million deaths in the US alone, we were forced to take a hard look at our own mortality, our willingness to protect others, and our understanding of what “community” means. We wrestled with the nostalgia of simply being around other people. We Zoomed. We howled at the moon. We played Animal Crossing.

Ultimately, the vaccines saved an estimated 3.2 million lives. Yet, from April 2021 to March 2022, the COVID death rate was 26% higher rate in areas where voters leaned heavily conservative. Measured from the moment that vaccines became available, conservatives saw a 153% increase in excess deaths compared to Democrats.
- The pandemic had a disproportionate social and financial impact on the LGBTQ+ community, with an estimated 40% of employed adults working in the effected industries of restaurants, education, hospitals, and retail
- Additionally, a higher rate of poverty and general economic instability in the LGBTQ community exacerbated the catastrophic events of the pandemic.
- However, the high rate of vaccination in the LGBTQ community (93%) helped alleviate much of the direct health risk compared to our straight counterparts (63%).
